This role is responsible for establishing the framework and stand practice and documentation for the initiating, forming and maintaining of partnerships with vendors supporting Global Clinical Operations studies. The Associate Director of Vendor Oversight & Operations partners with the Group Director of Business Partnerships, a matrix of relationship managers, the head of Outsourcing Management and other key BMS stakeholders across Global Clinical Operations. This role requires clinical trial operational experience, strong stakeholder management skills, and the ability to work across a highly matrixed and global organization. Rapid identification and transparent communication of risks as well as competency to mitigate those risks and resolve issues are key expectations. The roles is also responsible to build relationships with key stakeholders, to influence strategic alignment on key objectives and broader objectives and ensure understanding of and performance of timely and adequate oversight of Vendor performance.


  • Lead a team of specialists driving specific areas within remit including, but not limited to Process and Documentation Management, Due Diligence and Inspection Readiness, Performance Management and Administrative Vendor Support

  • Successfully collaborating inside the organization, engage with internal and vendor functional area leads in support of Vendor Oversight

  • Communicating effectively, partner with leadership to mine insights and help the business steer a successful program

  • Support the management of GCO business partners to ensure contract terms are fulfilled, through risk mitigation and leveraging efficient operational execution strategies - which will benefit both parties

  • Collaborate with members of Quality, Legal, Global Clinical Operations, Cross Organization roles and others to ensure expectations for business partners are met and clearly defined in such documents as Service Level Agreements, Contracts and Partnership Plans & Processes, Trainings

  • Assess current gaps which are currently contributing to sub-optimal performance and deliverables by the Vendor and make recommendations for process improvements.

  • Support Change Management efforts to enable smooth implementation of strategy and process improvements.

  • Act as a resource to study teams to ensure adequate oversight of Vendor is maintained and documented.

  • Develops and executes plan in alignment with BMS objectives and business partners.

  • Maintains and applies strong knowledge of clinical trial operations.

  • Manages a disciplined approach to accurate documentation

  • Integrates lessons learned across the vendor categories and partnerships within categories

Desired Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required with an advanced degree preferred

  • At least 10 years of relevant industry experience, with substantial business experience and experience leading teams

  • 5 years of Project Management experience, including change management and process improvement

  • Track record of leading through influence, working across complex, global organizational matrices

  • Demonstrated influential leadership and communication capabilities with a proven ability to engage, manage, develop and inspire a team

  • Business, operational, stakeholder management experience

  • First-hand experience of working directly with Contract Service Providers (CSPs) across vendor categories, as well as broad exposure to clinical trial operations in general

  • Actively contributes to issue identification and strategy discussions

  • Addresses the concerns and needs of stakeholders and manages stakeholders’ expectations

  • Facilitates issue resolution and communication/collaboration with stakeholders and other functional area team members

  • Builds alliances to gain key stakeholder support, buy-in and ownership

  • Builds and nurtures partnerships with internal and external team members that develop and maintain trust

  • Partners with business leaders to resolve competing priorities and issues related to stakeholder management

  • Achieves results by effective mobilization, development and utilization of resources
